We will be making concrete looking, lightweight pots using a mixture of Portland Cement, Spagnum peat moss and Perlite. You can make any size (within reason) or shape and add texture or not. There’s two methods that we can try this time around, draped or molded.
Draped pots utilize fabric, soaked in a more liquid version of the concrete mix and draped over a form. You can arrange the pleats however you like and the size of the pot will be determined by the form you drape over and the size of your fabric. Thick and absorbent fabrics are recommended for this look, such as towels, terrycloth, or chunky knits.

Molding a pot using a pot you already have will give you a more basic shape, but if you have a texture on the inside of your outer mold you can get a nice pattern on the outside of your hypertufa pot. If you only have smooth pots, you can add texture by lining the outer mold pot with bubble wrap, plastic, or other materials to create some interest.

I’ll have the ingredients on hand, you just need to bring:
- At least two pots, one bigger than the other -the second one will create the cavity inside the larger outer pot
- And/or a towel and mold to drape your pot over – like a plastic bucket, tub, or bin
Your pots can cure here and be picked up in a few weeks once they are fully hardened.
I found some good cheap pots with some interior texture at the dollar store, but any pots you already have will do fine as well. Check out the links above to get an idea of how this all works and gather your supplies!
